Zeus is a 1-2 year old

neutered male Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

As you can see he is very skinny but he will be a big boy

when he finally gets some meat on his bones.

He currently weighs 90 lbs.

Zeus is friendly with people and seems to ignore

the other dogs in the shelter.

We have not had the chance to evaluate him

outside of the shelter yet.

He is in urgent need of a foster home.

DESPERATE FOR A FOSTER FOR THIS BOY!!

This is Trapper.

We originally found this gentleman in a shelter in Austin TX

back in October, 2011.

We didn't have any open foster homes so

Trapper was transported to the kennel we use in the

Dallas/Ft Worth area.

That is where he still is today.

Poor Trapper is very sad and depressed.

When Tammy went to visit him the other day he put himself

between her and the kennel door to try to keep her from leaving.

He is a super sweet guy and really wants to bond with someone.

Trapper tested positive for heartworm and has been started on slow kill treatment.

He has a pea sized lump on his eye and also still needs to be neutered.

We have been trying to hold off on surgery, hoping to find a foster

so he didnt have to recover from surgery

in the kennel.

Its been 3 months now and Trapper really needs to get out of the kennel.

We will help with transport within 1000 miles.

He is very friendly with people

but he would probably do best as an only dog

unless you have the means to separate.

Bandit is a sweet heart.

He likes to be active and play. He does good with both male and female dogs.

Although he hasn't hurt any cats he does like to chase them. He loves to be outside and does well with a 4 foot fence.

He doesn't bark excessively but will tell you when someone stops by.

Bandit is house trained and does ok in a crate while no one is home. He sleeps well on the floor next to our bed through the night.

He does like to chew but has learned quickly to only chew on his toys so his forever home will need plenty of toys to chew on. He warms up to everyone he meets and his innocence will steal your heart.

Bandit hasn't been around kids but has shown no sign of aggressiveness or sign that he would not do well with children. Although he is new to living in a house he is learning his manners quickly and is eager to please. Bandit will make a great family dog and be a great addition to an active home.

He's been a faithful companion to his owner for 9 years.

His coat is matted so badly that he's going to need to be shaved down.

Under all that hair are his ribs with no fat on them.

His owner has provided only the most minimal care for this boy

and, now that he is 9 years old, has decided its time for him to go.

Pyrenees rescue has been bringing food to him

but they dont have any open foster homes.

We are trying to find a warm place for MD to curl up

on a cushy dog bed and have enough food in his tummy

to quiet the empty rumbling.

He is a very sweet natured boy and deserves something better

Back in October 2011, we pulled a very sad, skinny and old looking dog from a shelter

in California. She looked like she had pretty much given up on life.

Her owner had died and, by the shape she was in,

the owner had not taken good care of Ty for quite a long time.

Since being pulled from the shelter, Ty has had surgery to remove a large cyst on her hip

and she has received a lot of TLC and good food from her foster mom, Beth.

After her surgery, Ty was adopted by her new mom, Cathy.

This is a picture of Ty now. There's a sparkle in her eye and I really think I can see her smiling.

Ty doesnt even seem like the same dog we found in the shelter.

There's a spring in her step and she loves to play with her new best friend, Lucky Dog.

A huge THANK YOU to all of the folks that helped Ty

have this second chance in life.

PLEASE HELP SUGAR!

UPDATE ON SUGAR:

URGENT FOSTER HOME NEEDED

This is a good news/bad news posting.

The GOOD news is we were able to raise enough money

for Sugar to have surgery to repair her fractured pelvis.

She had surgery the day after Christmas and according to the vet,

the surgery was a success!!

The BAD news is that the foster mom that offered to take Sugar

after surgery backed out with no explanation or notice

so now we have nowhere for her to go.

Sugar is super sweet and friendly with people.
She's good with other dogs, too, both male and female.
She's doing great in her recovery, is putting on weight and
using her injured leg.
What a trooper she is, she remains happy and friendly and is
a smiler too !

She is currently in McAllen TX

We will help with transport within a 2 day drive.

Sugar was found near McAllen TX

alone, injured, limping, exhausted and hungry.

She was lucky enough to be found by a local rescue person

who took her in and contacted us to see if we could help.

As soon as you look at Sugar you can tell she is injured.

She cant put any weight on one of her back legs

You can see it is very hard for her to move.

The local rescuer who found Sugar

took her to the vet and had her xrayed.

The xray shows that Sugar has a fractured pelvis

and needs immediate surgery to repair it.

Estimated costs of surgery at Nolana Animal Hospital in McAllen TX is

$1685.00 to $1885.00

We were able to raise enough money for her surgey.

She made it through surgery just fine and the vet said it was a success!

Azar and Bo -- Bonded lovebugs looking for a new lovenest

Azar (spayed 3-yo female on left) and Bo (neutered 5-yo male on right) are two bonded Anatolian Shepherd Crosses (guessing there is a lot of Great Pyrenees in them) who grew up on a ranch in South Routt County Colorado.

They are incredibly sweet and loving dogs -- good temperaments toward people and they appear to have been well socialized -- and would like a foster or furever home together. They have been known to chase cars, so need a living situation where they can't engage in that. Bo has some difficulties with his hips due to an old injury, but the shelter put him on Rimadyl and he is doing much better.
The ideal situation for these two would be as family pets with a breed knowledgeable owner who has fenced yard that is higher than 4 ft. (Note -- the current 4 foot fence is not enough and the dogs can jump it, so they will need a taller and/or electric fence.)

Charlie is a 2 yo neutered male Anatolian Shepherd Dog cross.

He was adopted from a local shelter but was returned

when the family found out that he tested positive

for heartworms.

According to his vet, Charlie tested a low positive and is now

infestation. He should test negative within about 10 months.

VOLUNTEER TRANSPORT DRIVERS!!

Do you love dogs?

Wait, better yet, do you love Anatolians?

Do you like to hop in the car and take a short road trip now and then?

If so you may have the opportunity to combine your love of Anatolians

with your fondness of travel, "plus" being able to help a dog in need

all at the same time.

As many of you know, NASRN has relay transports running almost every weekend.

Almost all of our adoptions are long distance adoptions

so transports play a huge role in getting our dogs adopted and also sometimes to foster care.

We are in need of volunteer drivers to help these

dogs get to their foster or adoptive homes.

This is the way a relay transport works:

Our very talented Transport Coordinators,

Juliana Lipe and Beth Goldowitz,

plot the route in which the dog is going to travel to it's destination.

The trip is then broken down into "legs" or increments of

appx 50-100 miles.

They then send out the transport request to volunteers

that live along the route and also to the various rescue and transport

email lists.

Each driver will do their "leg" and hand the dog off to the next driver

at the pre-arranged time and place.

On average, a transport will have about 7 or 8 legs in one day.

All transports are arranged on the weekends.

The dog usually leaves bright and early on a Saturday morning, and,

depending on the length of the trip, will arrive

to their destination either Sat or Sunday evening.

I almost forgot, you can also write off some of your travel expenses as a donation!!

So, to recap, you will.....

meet some really great Anatolian Shepherd Dogs,

help an abandoned dog get to its new home

and write some of it off of your taxes.

Doesnt get much better than that!

Kibar is a 2 yo neutered male Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

For being so young, Kibar has apparently not had an easy life thus far.

We were told that his previous owner found him tied up and abandoned

in a parking lot.

We found Kibar in a shelter where he was slated to be euthanized.

He was in pretty rough shape, very skinny, two teeth that needed to be pulled,

plus also had a growth on his leg.

He's been to the vet to have the teeth pulled and the growth removed.

We also had him xrayed bc we thought he might have hip problems.

Thats not the case, though, as his hips look good.

The vet feels he has had some sort of trauma though and has some

muscle atrophy, possibly due to being chained up or caged too much.

The vet feels that proper nutrition plus exercise may improve his condition.

Despite his past, Kibar holds no grudges and is a very friendly and easy going boy.

He is friendly with everyone he meets, both humans and dogs.

We have not evaluated him with cats.

He weighs 102 right now but is still rather skinny.

He is mostly housebroken and isnt too bad on a leash.

Kibar has had a rough life so far and we are hopeful that his life

is headed in a better direction now.

He's such a lovable guy!

He will make a wonderful companion and loyal friend.

Her owner bought her to be a working livestock guardian

however Pai prefers to be with people and wont stay in her pen

with the livestock.

as she is not very happy being on a chain.

Bo and Zara's owner said his wife turned them into pets

and they didnt want to stay with the sheep

so he was going to shoot them.

Thankfully they contacted rescue first.

These two are very bonded and would do best if they could

stay together.

Bo is 5, neutered, current on shots.

He was hit by a car in the past and has some stiffness

in one of his hips. He can still move freely but you can tell it hurts.

Zara is 3, spayed and current on shots.

This "before" picture was taken when he first came into the shelter.

Guthrie OK

Sargent's owner died in May of this year. His owner's family

did not want him or his lifelong companion, a female Pyrenees.

Pyr rescue took the female and we took Sargent.

Sargent is good with female dogs, we have not tested him with male dogs.

He is very sweet and friendly with people.

He is appx 4-5 yrs old, neutered and current on shots.

He keeps his kennel clean so we think he is housebroken.

RUBY IN DALLAS

Ruby is about 3 yrs old, she is sweet, friendly and

is looking for a foster or adoptive home.

She was pulled from a kill shelter after being found as a stray.

Her companion was adopted so now she is alone at the boarding kennel.

Ruby is good with other dogs and kids and is very friendly.

She is clean in her kennel and seems to be housebroken,

calm, walks nicely on leash!!

"KYZ IN DALLAS TX"

Kyz is a 7 yo spayed female red fawn Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

Her owners moved and decided they no longer wanted her or their male Anatolian, Target.

Again, we had no foster homes and she was threatening to take them to a shelter

so Kyz and Target are now in a boarding kennel too.

Kyz is probably in the worst shape of these three dogs, meaning

she is extremely distraught, confused and depressed.

We are very worried about her health and mental well being.

Her whole world has been turned upside down and she is

in pitiful shape.

Kyz is great with kids, friendly with people and good with other dogs.

She is housebroken and walks on leash.

A loving foster or adoptive home would be

SO wonderful for Kyz!

She is mellow and sweet, but oh-so-sad

"TARGET IN DALLAS TX"

Target came from the same home as Kyz and was dumped for the same reason.

No reason, really, its just that the dogs became an inconvenience for the family.

Target has infections in both of his ears and his owner said she was

"tired of him and his ears".

As if he purposely got his ears infected just to make her mad!

He is going to the vet this week for meds so he can start feeling better again.

Target is confused, sad and depressed as well.

As with Kyz and Sargent, his world has been tuned upside down.

He is good with kids, friendly with people, good with other dogs.

"GUTHRIE"

ADOPTED

Guthrie is a 13 month old male

Anatolian or Anatolian x Great Pyrenees cross

He was turned into the shelter because his owner said

he wanted to be with people more than his goats.

He didnt want a pet dog so he dumped him in a kill shelter.

Luckily, a very nice person pulled him from the shelter even though

she is in TN on vacation (she lives in Houston).

So she is taking care of Guthrie right now while she is on vacation

but she can only hold on to him for about ten more days.

He is being neutered and vetted this week.

He is about 28 inches at the shoulders but we dont have a weight on him yet.

He LOVES LOVES LOVES children.

He is eager to please, intelligent and loving.

He very much wants to be in the house and be a part of the family.

He is good with female dogs, has not been tested with male dogs or cats yet.

We are looking for either a foster or adoptive home ASAP

We will always do our best to help with transport!!

Serena is a sweet, happy, playful and intelligent 9 month old puppy.

Her mother is a pinto Anatolian (pictured below)

and daddy might be the Doberman that mamma was hanging out with

when she was found as a stray, already pregnant.

Serena is the only pup of her litter that hasnt been adopted yet.

She may not look like your typical Anatolian

but she is as sweet as the day is long

and she is an incredibly smart and loving young lady.

Serena LOVES kids.

She is great with other dogs, is housebroken and has good manners indoors.

She is spayed and fully vetted and in good health.

JEFFIE IS ADOPTED!!

Jefferson ended up in a shelter back in November of last year.

He has been in foster care ever since but this weekend

"Jeffie" was transported to his new home in Florida.

He had a long trip with a week's layover in Nashville

but he was a real trooper and took it all in stride.

I don't know if anyone is aware of how many people are involved

in the process of caring for a rescue dog, finding the right home for him/her

and then getting him/her to their new family.

It takes a lot of time and so many people are involved.

Each person is a volunteer who is paid purely by the joy of knowing

that their effort helped this dog get out of the shelter and into a loving home.

I'd like to take a minute to thank all of our "Angels",

which is what we call our Adoption Coordinators,

for all the time spent looking for just the right home,

not only for Jeffie, but for all of our dogs.

Special thanks to Jeffie's foster mom, Janice,

for taking such good care of him all this time.

A huge thank you to all of the transport drivers

who carried him on his journey and

a very big thank you to Juliana, our tireless

Transport Extraordinaire

for putting this all together.

We would also like to thank Robin at

for being such a gracious hostess to so many of our dogs

Hanna literally pushed her way through a door at a convenience store during a thunderstorm. The shelter has been unable to locate her owners. Hanna is very friendly with people. She s very laid back and enjoys laying in the sun. She is good with kids of all ages, other dogs, and cats. She may has some hip issues which are common for older dogs such as Hana.

NASRN 2012 CALENDAR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Time goes by fast and it's getting to be that time again where we start asking you to take and submit pictures of your Anatolian or Anatolian mix for the 2012 calendar.

We accept pictures of any Anatolian or Anatolian mix, it doesn't have to be a picture of a dog your adopted from our group!

This year the deadline for submitting pictures is AUGUST 15th.

When taking pictures be sure to have your camera set to high resolution and make sure you send the picture in the largest file possible. So many great pictures are excluded because they are not in a large enough file. Pictures in small files will not print well and will be blurry and fuzzy.

Please be sure to send in LARGE file and do not crop or re size. Minimum file size: 1200 x 1600

Pictures are chosen for clarity, centering, pose and, as mentioned before, size for reproducibility/printing.

This is a doggy calendar so please try to not send in pics that have humans included. =)

TIP #1: Be flash free

Turn off the flash on your camera. You don't need it and it flat-out ruins an image. Freeing yourself from on-camera flash photography is the best thing you can do to create better images. How, you ask, does a person capture their dog in a dark living room at night? The simple answer is: do not take pictures of your do in a dark living room at night.

We're talking about pictures you actually want to display, email to friends or enter in a calendar contest.

Wait for daylight and go outside where flash isn't needed anyway. When you head outside, look for open shade. A great spot is under a tree with just a bit of reflected light coming in an an angle. Direct sunlight causes animals to squint, in addition to washing out their beautiful fur color. Early morning hours or sunset are great times for pet portraits in beautiful light.

TIP # 2: Turn to Treats

If your pet is treat motivated, picture taking time is perfect for bringing out favorite treats. It's best to have a helper who can hold the treat above your pet's nose and drop it to the floor right before you snap the shutter--this will help ensure your pet is looking directly toward the camera when the picture is being taken. A favorite squeaky toy can also do the trick for getting that "tilted head" that is so cute.

If you're looking for action shots. a tennis ball is a terrific prop. Have your "assistant" throw the ball directly in front of your camera a few feet then get ready and get low. As our pet comes rushing toward you, snap the shutter making sure your camera is on a high shutter speed to freeze the action.

Most cameras have a "Shutter Priority" mode meaning you can set the shutter speed manually and the camera will adjust the f-stop. On many cameras it is represented by a "T" on the mode dial. I like 1/1500 of a second or higher when capturing action.

TIP #3: Look Toward The Light
If you have your heart set on taking your pet's picture inside, choose a north facing window. Window light is the best for capturing animals and people during daylight hours. Make sure your flash is off. Have your pet sit as close to the window as possible. Sometimes moving their doggy bed to that spot will help. Play the "treat game" and I think you'll be pleased with the images you take with just the available light.

Maggie is a 2 year old spayed female Anatolian Shepherd x Lab cross.

Her owner found her as a little puppy, sitting on the side of a busy road.

She has had to move in with family now and no longer has a fenced yard

for Maggie so she is hoping to find her another home where she is able to

go outside to run and play.

She is 4 yrs old, spayed, in good health and weighs 110 lbs.

Happy was originally a working dog but then her owners sold their goats

and later sold Happy.

She has been a little too rough with the show goats that her new owners raise

and therefore she is looking for a new home.

Happy is friendly with people and good with children.
